!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Update: I do think it could work and be cool if done properly, however I don’t plan on doing it. I had my wipers completely off for a few days, as I was painting them and got used to how much sleeker it was without them. So I started looking at lower profile wiper blades and then I stumbled upon a thread with this in it. It peaked my interest.

Don’t do that. I tried.

Really?? Didn’t work??
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:12 |

I don’t know. You tell me. do you still want to do it?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:13 |

You want to pay money to have a less usable car.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:16 |

Did you watch the video? Also I’m on the fence... shouldn’t be difficult and racecar.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:17 |

I did. Seems like something to do on a stripped out car you aren’t in the rain much in. And thats about it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:17 |

It wouldn’t necessarily be less usable. If it’s good enough for lemans...
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:20 |

Maybe. I’ve never been in a car with a single wiper before so I don’t know for sure. I guess I’d have to be consistent with putting on rain x
![]() 04/23/2018 at 14:29 |

How about this. Of all the things you could spend your time and money on with your Miata, this is one of the most pointless I’ve ever seen.

My Subaru XT from 1989 had a center wipper, it was on a big cam so it actually covered the entire windshield. It worked pretty well, and was funny to watch on full speed, like a freaking maniac going so fast.

Does this improve your car in any way?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:23 |

Right but those windows and wipers are designed for it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:27 |

Hahaha. You’ve been the most convincing thus far
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:28 |

Lol. This was factory installed?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:33 |
|
Yes, the only other one I can remember was installed on some 1980's Mercedes.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:34 |

I’m not really sure... Maybe if I took out the other wiper that would make the wiper motor have less strain and therefore suck that much less power when in use. Although negligible. I guess I got used to how much better it was with no wipers. (I took them off to paint). Then I was looking at lower profile wiper blades and then this lol
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:35 |

You’re right. I’ll need a whole new windshield.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:37 |

Dope!
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:39 |

There are so many things that you can do to thar car to improve it. This just feels like a waste of time and money for no real gain.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 15:48 |

The voice of reason. You are absolutely right. I was just amused lol

I had that configuration on a 90's civic. It was the peak of rice at the time, as I learned it from watching way too many Best Motoring videos.
I don’t recommend it, it really doesn’t work well in the rain. Those massive wipers grab too much air.

MB’s first was W201, entered production late 1982:
Then seen on W124, R129, W202, W210, MB had them in production for roughly 20 years.

Ha they did it on best motoring? Also you’re the first person to respond that actually modified their car to do this. Good to know it is not actually practical
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:08 |

Look at that go, how cool is that!
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:18 |

Fiat Unos had a simple, single wiper which really managed to clean most of the windscreen.
The W201 also has a single wiper but a very sophisticated one: the wiper arm extends itself to better reach the corners of the windscreen - a typically very effective, very overengineered (in the good sense) Mercedes-Benz solution.
(Old
Mercedes-Benz, that is.)

Just leave the wipers alone. Put some Rain-X on and use the wipers as little as possible. It looks ridiculous. (my opinion obviously you are welcome to your own)
Now, if you did it with the Mercedes hardware that parks the wiper properly and makes it ‘dip’ in the middle, that’s cool.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:41 |

If you absolutely have to remove a wiper, just remove both and become good friends with rainx. I don’t think it’s legal.... But it should work quite well
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:42 |

I mean, I put custom gauges in despite those gauges being inoperable. Runner-up prize are least?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:52 |

I agree that his implementation looked half assed, but yeah like the merc there that’s pretty solid. Also I am currently doing exactly that. Rain x is amazing.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:59 |
|
Haha yeah I use rain x currently. Stuff is amazing. And for the most part it would be enough, but at low speeds the water beading doesn’t really move so much and I’m not sure it would do enough in downpours (which happen here often and unpredictablely enough as it we are very close to a few areas that are actually considered rainforests). But as is I use my wipers very sporadically with the rain x

I don’t recommend it, spend money elsewhere on cooler stuff. If anything, try finding another NA wiper arm with the screwed-on wing and then mount it on your passenger wiper arm for double the over-the-head airflow!
![]() 04/23/2018 at 18:22 |
|
Hahahaha. Best idea yet
![]() 04/23/2018 at 18:27 |
|
I have a NA arm laying around in my room that needs to be sand-blasted and powder coated, but I haven’t had the time to do it. I want to see if there’s really a noticeable difference with or without the wing, especially on a NB.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 20:39 |
|
Yeah I’d be curious too. People seem to use the Nb arms instead with no issues, but maybe they aren’t going to speeds in excess of 110 mph or so...
![]() 04/23/2018 at 20:47 |
|
From what I’ve heard from one of the mods on the Miata.net forums, someone who actually visited Mazda’s facility in California back in the first year or two of the NA’s introduction, he said the Mazda engineer explained the little wing was to help reduce turbulence on the driver’s face and head by pushing the airflow further above and over the cockpit.

Hey, I’m there for ya.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 20:48 |

That’s pretty pointless on top of being vain. So yeah, honorable mention at the least, but not overtly visible lunacy.

I’ve had 2 MBs with the single wiper. It can be fun and a little distracting, especially when it is new to you. People always commented on it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 21:14 |
|
Ooooh shit. Really? So it’s only beneficial if you have the top down? In that case how considerate of you to get one for the passenger
![]() 04/23/2018 at 21:18 |
|
Might as well have both occupants enjoy the roadster life! I still need to test it on myself first before I source another one!
![]() 04/23/2018 at 22:05 |
|
That’s crazy if that’s true. I had heard it was to provide downforce on the wiper at high speeds. I wonder how it affects actual aerodynamics. I usually drive with the hard top on as I removed my soft top
![]() 04/23/2018 at 22:10 |
|
Whenever I do it, it’ll be easy to tell since I’m constantly doing 75 mph on the interstate to get across the state for C&C and autocross!

Nice. You have to report back when you do. I really want to see how it will look as well! Should be interesting lol
